India Wedding, What to expect?

Whenever you find yourself invited to an Indian wedding, expect to have the most incredible time of your life, creating unforgettable memories and experiences during the wedding events and ceremonies. Not all Indian weddings are alike; depending on the region, religion, community, and personal preferences of the bride and groom, each wedding is tailor-made to make one unique wedding package to their needs. As for the timeline, an Indian wedding varies again on the couple, families' beliefs, and traditions they follow.

Below you will find a guide that sheds light on the most asked question on Indian weddings.

What to wear to an Indian wedding?

For Women

Vibrant and bright colors are the way to go. Have fun picking bold, brilliant color waves, and don’t be afraid to wear them. Choosing such bright color waves will help you fit with the other Indian guests dressed over the top colors accessories with jewelry from head to toe. In case you don’t have a traditional sari, another appropriate choice is to wear a dress with a shawl. Western dress is acceptable, but it is encouraged to get traditional attire.

For Men

Western suits are acceptable, or if you wish to wear traditional attire like Kurta Pajamas, the final decision is based on your comfort zone. Bright colors are better for men to wear but selecting the right one that you are comfortable in is essential.

How long does an Indian Wedding last?

A traditional Indian wedding lasts at least three days.

On the first night, the families of the bride and groom gather at home for the Ganesh Pooja. This informal event is where both families or close relatives get together and get to know each other.

Following the second day, the women begin Mehndi or Henna preparations. Henna is a very sacred part of an Indian wedding. The Mehndi or Henna is the art painted onto the bride and her bridesmaids' skins in the morning and is allowed to be set for the rest of the day. It usually takes about 8 hours to dry.

At night, the Sangeet Ceremony proceeds. Families, close relatives, and even guests of the bride and groom at the wedding are invited to mingle and enjoy a meal. This celebration includes traditional dances performed by the bride and groom, close friends, and relatives.

On the third day, the formal wedding occurs where the bride and the groom will be declared married.

Indian Wedding food

Indian cuisine is known for two things: incorporating spicy spices and its unique vegetarian dishes. However, not all wedding menus are the same; it depends on the couple and families to choose whether or not to follow strict traditional and religious guidelines.

For instance, during a traditional Indian wedding, there is no meat allowed during the day if a religious ceremony takes place. For other events, such as the wedding reception, you will find both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. Moreover, expect to eat a lot of food. Typically during an Indian wedding reception, you will be able to have a wide array of Indian food served as a style buffet.
